Jan 06,2026Polyolefin shrink film, commonly referred to as POF, has become the industry standard for high-speed automated packaging. Unlike its predecessor, PVC, polyolefin is a co-extruded material made from a mix of polyethylene and polypropylene. This composition provides exceptional clarity and a high gloss finish, making it ideal for retail products where aesthetics are paramount. Its cross-linked structure allows for a high degree of tensile strength, ensuring that the film doesn't become brittle over time or under varying temperature conditions. This durability is critical for multi-packs or heavy items that require structural integrity during transit.
The chemical stability of POF is one of its most significant advantages. It does not contain chlorine, which means it doesn't produce hazardous odors or corrosive gases when heated during the sealing process. This makes it safer for warehouse operators and better for the longevity of the packaging machinery. Furthermore, POF offers a "balanced" shrink, meaning it shrinks uniformly in both the machine direction (MD) and the cross direction (CD), resulting in a smooth, wrinkle-free finish even on irregularly shaped objects.
When choosing a shrink wrap, it is essential to understand how polyolefin compares to other materials like PVC or Polyethylene (PE). While PE is thicker and used for heavy-duty bundling (like water bottle cases), POF is the preferred choice for consumer goods due to its superior clarity and puncture resistance.
| Feature | Polyolefin (POF) | PVC | Polyethylene (PE) |
| Clarity | Excellent/Crystal Clear | Good/Blue Tint | Hazy/Translucent |
| Eco-Friendliness | 100% Recyclable | Low/Hazardous Fumes | High/Recyclable |
| Shrink Force | High/Consistent | Moderate/Brittle | Low/Strong Hold |
Because polyolefin is a multi-layered film, it possesses incredible "memory" and elasticity. This allows it to wrap around sharp corners—such as those on DVD cases, toy boxes, or industrial parts—without tearing. Even if a small puncture occurs, the film is designed to resist further propagation of the tear, ensuring the product remains protected until it reaches the end consumer.

POF remains flexible at extremely low temperatures, making it the ideal choice for frozen foods or products stored in cold-chain environments. Conversely, it maintains its seal integrity in high-heat environments, preventing the "dog-ears" or brittle cracking often seen in lower-quality films. This wide temperature tolerance expands its utility across the food, pharmaceutical, and electronics industries.
The shift toward sustainable and consumer-safe packaging has accelerated the adoption of polyolefin shrink film across various sectors. Its food-grade certification (FDA approved) makes it indispensable for direct contact packaging.
To achieve a professional finish with polyolefin shrink film, the equipment settings must be precisely calibrated. Since POF requires a slightly higher temperature than PVC to activate its shrink properties, operators must balance heat, conveyor speed, and airflow. If the heat is too high, the film may burn or "fish-eye"; if the airflow is insufficient, the film will not contour tightly to the product.
Pre-perforation is another critical factor. Most POF films come with micro-perforations or require a "hot pin" system on the wrapper to allow air to escape during the shrinking process. This prevents air pockets (balloons) from forming, ensuring a tight, "skin-like" fit that enhances the product's profile while utilizing the minimum amount of material possible.
